On April 5, 2023, STLE Philadelphia members Eirini Spilioti, Bill Tuszynski, Tom O’Brien and Stephanie Zublick had the opportunity to judge the Delaware Valley Science Fair. we awarded five $100 prizes to the following deserving students. These students were not only exceptional in their use of the scientific method, but were very passionate about their projects!
Middle School
Sophie Kalish-Schur, “The Speed of Liquid”
This student evaluated how changing the temperature of liquids (both water and oil) impacted the viscosity of the fluids. This viscosity impact then had a direct correlation to the speed of dispersion of the dye in the fluid
9th Grade
Andrew Van Pelt, “How Different Geometric Shapes and Arrays Affect the Strength and Properties of a 3D Printed Part”
This student designed his own 3-D parts with different internal honeycomb structures. He then ran tensile strength testing on the various parts
10th Grade
Keino Shaw, “Preventing Rust Using Sacrificial Anodes”
This student ran corrosion studies in both high saline and deionized water and observed the corrosion of iron nails in the presence of various sacrificial metals.
Adarsh Narayanan, “Which Metal Corrodes the Quickest?”
This student ran corrosion testing on various grades of steel under the same conditions to evaluate how iron content in the steel affects the rate of corrosion
12th Grade
Anna Zeigler, “Determining the Efficiency of Varying Spoke Patterns Within Airless Tires”
This student designed her own airless tires using a 3-D printer and then ran studies using a small weighted box car she made to determine how far the car would go using the various tire designs
