STLE Section Awards Scholarship to Drexel University BS/MS Student
The Philadelphia Section of the STLE is pleased to award a 2018 scholarship to Mark Petrovic, a BS/MS student in Drexel’s Material Science and Engineering Department.
Working under the direction of Dr. Michele Marcolongo, Petrovic is studying novel materials for bone scaffolding known as Nano Fiber Shish-Kabobs (NFSKs). These materials are synthesized by electrospinning (poly)caprolactone and modifying the fiber surface with (poly)caprolactone-(poly)acrylic acid block copolymers. By modifying the surface treatments, the extent and orientation of hydroxyapatite mineralization (bone formation) can be controlled.
In addition to his research work, Petrovic has maintained an outstanding academic record. He has been awarded an A. W. Grosenver Scholarship by the Philadelphia Liberty Bell ASM Chapter. Petrovic is a member of Drexel’s Pennoni Honors College and selected as an Undergraduate Research Leader by the Office of Undergraduate Research. He has also been admitted to the elite Drexel Aspire Scholar program for exceptional undergraduate students. Petrovic plan on pursuing a joint MD/PhD in tissue engineering on completion of his Drexel studies.
