Lead Applications Scientist

Croda is seeking a Lead Applications Scientist to join our Energy Technologies R&T team, located at our Atlas Point facility in New Castle, DE.
Key Responsibilities:
Apply technical knowledge to formulate and evaluate new and existing Lubricant additives to meet market needs with respect to application, contribution to physical properties in final formulation, cost constraints that lead to protected and commercially viable products. The role carries no line management responsibility. However, it may be necessary to supervise or demonstrate to co-ops and graduate trainees.
Design and carry out multiple lab experiments simultaneously; review results and seek answers to problems encountered through collection of data and investigation.
Select the most viable development route in projects that can either be complex or straightforward. If the Lead Scientist is not sure then (s)he will go to line manager for advice.
Use a creative and viable approach to support new product launches and existing product ranges, including development of new test methodologies or developing new and novel finished formulations for promotional means.
Provide technical support to sales and marketing when required (e.g., answering customer technical enquiries, recommending Croda products, providing training and perhaps work directly at the customers’ facilities).
Clearly communicate complex technical information verbally, through emails and technical reports to technical colleagues, commercial team members and customers. Keep the global technical and commercial team up to date with respect to various project’s status.
The Lead Scientist will also: support scale-up work via consultation and in person; write and present papers at major Lubricants conferences; and assist in rectifying product quality issues.

BS/MS/PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Tribology or Materials Science
Minimum 3 years’ experience in the Lubricants market
Ability to progress multiple projects simultaneously, under own initiative
Creative and tenacious with good planning skills
Strong presentation and technical writing skills with proficiency in MS Office
Willingness and ability to travel domestically or internationally
Demonstrated ability to work and contribute in a team environment
Customer-facing experience
General knowledge of surfactant chemistry and its related application as applied to Lubricants is preferred
A proven track record of new product development that leads to sales is preferred
Travel is expected to be between 10 to 15% and will be mainly to customers and conferences within the United States, though some international travel may occasionally be required.
This is a hands-on laboratory R&D position that will require periodic lifting of 25 to 30 lbs; safely working with hazardous chemicals as well as literature searching and technical report writing.
